WHY THIS IS GOOD NEWS - JOHN
This is based on the N.I.V. translation and the
Nestle Greek text of John's Gospel written about
85 A.D. or 27 lifetimes ago. Our comments are in
brackets.
In the beginning was the Word,
-and the Word was with God,
-and the Word was God.
-This one was with God in the beginning.
-Through Him all things came into being and
-without Him not one thing came into being.
-In Him was life
-and the life was the light of men.
-The light shines in the darkness
-and the darkness hasn't overcome
it.
-There was a man sent from God named John.
-He came to witness concerning the light
-that all men might believe through him.
-He wasn't the light
-but came (was sent) to bear witness
concerning the light.
-It was the true light
-which enlightens every man coming into
the world.
-He was in the world
-and the world came into being through
Him
-and the world didn't know Him.
-He came to His own
-and His own people didn't
receive Him.
-But whoever received Him
-He gave the right to become
God's children,
-to those believing in His
name
-who aren't born physically
nor
-of the will of the flesh
-nor the will of man
-but were born of God.
-And the Word became flesh,
-dwelt among us
-and we beheld His glory,
-glory as of the only begotten (Son)
from the Father,
-full of grace and truth.
-John witnessed concerning Him
-and cried out saying
-"This man was He of whom I said
-the one coming after me
-ranks before me
-because He was before me
-and from His fullness we've
-all received grace upon
grace.
-For the law was given through Moses
(but)
-grace and truth became (known)
through Jesus Christ.
-No man's ever seen God.
-God the only begotten (Son)
-being in the Father's bosom
-has declared Him (told us all
about Him).
-And this is John's witness
-when the Jews sent priests and Levites from
Jerusalem
-to ask him who he was
-and he didn't deny it but confessed
-"I'm not the Christ."
-They asked "What then,
-are you Elijah?"
-He said "I'm not."
-"Are you the prophet?"
-He answered "No."
-They therefore said "Who are you? So we
can give an answer to those who sent
us."
-He said "I'm a voice of one crying in
the desert
-make straight the Lord's way
-as Isaiah the prophet said."
-The questioners were Pharisees
and they asked
-"Why then do you baptise if
you're not
-the Christ, Elijah or the
prophet?"
-He said "I baptise with water.
-Among you stands one you don't know
-who's coming after me,
-of whom I'm not worthy to loosen
His sandal thong."
-This happened in Bethany beyond the Jordan
-where John was baptising.
-Next day he sees Jesus coming towards
him and says
-"Behold the Lamb of God
-taking away the sin of the world,
-this is He of whom I said
-after me comes a man who ranks
before me
-for He was before me.
-I didn't know Him,
-but I came baptising in water
-that He might be manifested to
Israel."
-And John witnessed
-"I've beheld the Spirit coming down
as a dove out of heaven
-and He remained on Him.
-I didn't know Him but the one who
sent me to baptise in water
-said 'the one you see the
Spirit
-coming down and remaining on
-is the one baptising in the
Holy Spirit'
-and I've seen and witnessed
that
-this is the Son of God."
-Next day John stood with two of his disciples
-and looking at Jesus walking He said
-"Behold the Lamb of God."
-His two disciples heard him speak
-and followed Jesus.
-Jesus turned, saw them following
and said
-"What do you seek?"
-They said "Rabbi," meaning
teacher,
-"Where are you staying?"
-He replied "Come and you'll
see."
-They went, saw where He was
staying
-and remained with Him that
day. It was about 4 p.m.
-Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was
one of them.
-Finding Simon he told him
-"We've found the Messiah"
meaning Christ.
-He led him to Jesus.
-Looking at him Jesus said
-"You're Simon, John's son, you'll be
called Cephas" meaning Peter.
-Next day Jesus wished to go to Galilee.
-He found Philip and said "Follow me."
-Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of
Andrew and Peter.
-Philip found Nathanael and said
-"We've found He of whom Moses wrote
in the Law and the prophets
-Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth."
-Nathanael said "Can anything good
come out of Nazareth?"
-Philip said "Come and see."
-Jesus saw Nathanael coming
and said "Here's a true
Israelite in whom there's no
guile."
-Nathanael said "How do you know
me?"
-Jesus answered "Before Philip
called you
-I saw you under the fig tree."
-Nathanael replied "Rabbi
you're God's Son, Israel's
king."
-Jesus said "You believe because I
told you I
-saw you under the fig tree?
-You'll see greater things than
these.
-You'll see heaven opened
-and God's angels going up and
coming down
-on God's Son."
(Chapter 1)
On the third day a wedding took place in Cana of
Galilee
-and Jesus' mother was there.
-Jesus and His disciples were invited.
-When the wine ran out Jesus' mother said
-"They've no wine."
-He said "Woman what have you to do
with me?
-My time's not yet come."
-His mother said to the servants
-"Do whatever He tells you."
-There were six water pots
there according to the
purifying of the Jews, each
containing 20 to 30 gallons.
-Jesus told them "Draw (water) and carry
to the
-Master of Ceremonies."
-They did.
-When he tasted the water having
become wine,
-not knowing where it came from,
-but the servants did, having
drawn the water,
-he called the bridegroom and
said
-"Every man serves the good
wine first
-and when everyone's drunk,
the worse,
-but you've kept the good
wine 'til last."
-Jesus did the beginning of the signs in
-Cana of Galilee
-and manifested His glory
-and the disciples believed in Him.
-After this He went down to Capernaum
-with His mother, brothers and disciples
-and remained not many days.
-The Jews' Passover was near
-and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
-In the Temple He found
-sellers of oxen, sheep and doves
-and the coin dealers sitting.
-Making a lash out of ropes He
-expelled all out of the Temple,
both the
-sheep, oxen and the
-money changers.
-He poured the coins out
-and overturned the tables.
-He said to those selling doves
-"Take these things away,
-don't make my Father's house
-a house of merchandise."
-His disciples remembered that
it was written
-"Zeal for your house will
consume me."
-The Jews said "What sign can you show us
-(to prove your authority) for doing these
things?"
-Jesus replied "Destroy this temple
-and I'll raise it in three days."
-The Jews said "It's taken 46 years to
build this Temple
-and you'll raise it in three days?"
-But He spoke of the temple of His
body.
-When therefore He was raised
from the dead
-His disciples remembered what
He'd said
-and believed the scripture
-and the word Jesus had said.
-When He was in Jerusalem at the Passover
feast
-many believed in His name
-when they saw the signs He was doing.
-But Jesus didn't commit Himself to them
-because He knew all men and
-needed no one to tell Him about men
-because He knew what was in man.
(Chapter 2)
There was a Pharisee and Jewish ruler named
Nicodemus.
-He came to Jesus by night and said
-"Rabbi, we know you're a teacher come from
God
-for no one can do the signs you do
-unless God's with him."
-Jesus said "Unless anyone's born from
above
-he can't see God's (my) kingdom."
-Nicodemus said "How can a man be
born when he's old?
-Can he enter his mother's womb
a second time and be born?"
-Jesus answered "Unless anyone's born
of water and the Spirit
-he can't enter God's (my) kingdom.
-What's born of the flesh is flesh
and
-what's born of the Spirit is
Spirit.
-Don't marvel that I told you
'You must be born from
above.'
-The Spirit (wind) blows where
it wishes,
-you hear the sound
-but you don't know where it
comes from or goes to.
-It's the same with anyone
being born of the Spirit."
-Nicodemus asked "How can these things come
about?"
-Jesus said "You're the teacher of Israel
-and you don't know these things?
-What we know we speak and
-testify of what we've seen
-and you won't receive our
testimony.
-If I told you earthly things
and you don't believe
-how will you believe if I
tell you heavenly things?
-No man's gone up into heaven
-except the one who came down
from heaven,
-the Son of Man (me).
-As Moses lifted up the serpent in
the desert
-so must I be
-so that everyone believing on
me
-may have everlasting life.
-For God so loved the world
-that He gave His only begotten
Son (me)
-that everyone believing in me
-may not perish
-but have eternal life.
-For God sent me into the world
-not to judge it
-but that it might be saved
through me.
-Anyone believing in me
isn't judged.
-Anyone not believing has
already been judged
-because he hasn't
believed in the name
-of God's only begotten
Son (me).
-This is the judgment
-that the light has come into
the world
-and men loved the darkness
-rather than the light
-because their works were
evil.
-For everyone doing evil
-hates the light and doesn't
come to it
-lest his works be exposed.
-But he who does the truth
-comes to the light
-that his works may be
clearly seen
-to have been done through
God."
-After this Jesus and His disciples came into
Judea,
-where He continued with them and baptised.
-John was also baptising in Aenon near
Salim
-because there was much water there
-and they came and were baptised
-for John hadn't yet been
imprisoned.
-A question about purifying arose
-between John's disciples and a Jew.
-They said to John "Jesus to whom
you've borne witness
-baptises and all men are coming to
Him."
-John replied "A man can receive
only what's
-given from heaven.
-You bear witness that I said
-'I'm not the Christ but
I'm sent before Him.'
-The bride belongs to the
bridegroom
-but his friend, standing and
hearing him,
-rejoices when he hears his
voice.
-That's my joy and it's
fulfilled.
-He must increase
-and I must decrease.
-He's from above and is over
all,
-I'm of the earth and speak
of it.
-The one coming from above
-is over all,
-He witnesses to what He's
seen and heard
-and no one accepts His
witness
(but) anyone who does,
certifies that God's true.
-The one God sent (Jesus)
speaks God's words
-for God gives the Spirit
without limit.
-The Father loves the Son
(Jesus)
-and has given everything
into His hand.
-The one believing in the Son
has eternal life
-but the one disobeying Him
-will not see life
-but God's wrath remains
on him."
(Chapter 3)
-Knowing that the Pharisees heard that
-His disciples made and baptised more
disciples than John,
-Jesus left Judea and returned to Galilee.
-Having to go through Samaria,
-He came to a city named Sychar
-near the piece of land Jacob gave
his son Joseph.
-Jacob's well was there.
-Wearied by the journey,
-Jesus sat by the well at
about noon,
-His disciples having gone
into the city to buy food.
-A Samaritan woman came to draw water.
-Jesus said to her "Give me a drink."
-She replied, "How come you, a Jew
-ask me, a Samaritan, for a
drink?"
-For Jews won't associate with
Samaritans.
-Jesus replied "If you knew God's gift
-and who's asking you for a drink,
-you'd have asked me for living
water."
-She said "The well's deep, you have
no bucket,
-where can you get living water?
-Are you greater than our father
Jacob,
-who gave us the well,
-and drank from it himself, as
did
-his sons, flocks and herds?"
-Jesus answered "Everyone drinking
this water will thirst again,
-but whoever drinks of the water
I'll give him
-will never thirst,
-but the water I'll give him
-will become in him a well of
water
-springing up to eternal
life."
-The woman said "Sir give me this
water
-so I won't get thirsty
-nor come here to draw water."
-He said "Go call your husband and
come here."
-She replied "I have no husband."
-Jesus said "Well said, you've had
five husbands
-and the man you have now isn't your
husband."
-She replied, "Sir I perceive you're a
prophet.
-Our fathers worshipped in this
mountain (Gerizim)
-and you say Jerusalem is the
place to worship."
-Jesus said "An hour's coming when
neither here
-nor in Jerusalem will you worship
the Father.
-You worship what you don't know
-we worship what we know
-because salvation is from the
Jews.
-But an hour's coming and now
is
-when true worshippers
-will worship the Father in
Spirit and truth.
-For such the Father seeks
-to worship Him.
-God is Spirit and
-those worshipping Him
-must worship in Spirit and
truth."
-The woman said "I know the
Messiah's coming,
-the one called Christ and
-when He comes He'll announce
everything to us."
-Jesus said to her "I, the one
speaking to you, am He."
-Just then the disciples returned and
marvelled
-that He spoke with a woman
-but no one asked "What do you want?"
-or "Why do you speak to her?"
-She left her water pot,
-went into the city and said to the
men
-"Come see a man who told me
everything I ever did.
-Isn't this the Christ?"
-So they went out of the city
to Him.
-Meantime His disciples asked Him to eat,
-But He said "I've food to eat you know
nothing about."
-The disciples asked each other "Has
anyone brought Him food?"
-He said, "My food's to do the will
-of the One who sent me
-and finish His work.
-You say 'Four months 'til the
harvest.'
-I tell you, lift up your eyes,
-and see the fields,
-they're ripe for harvest.
-Already the reaper receives wages
-and gathers fruit for eternal
life
-so that sower and reaper
-may rejoice together.
-For this word's true
-that 'One sows and,
another reaps.'
-I sent you to reap what
-you haven't laboured for.
-Others have done the hard work
-and you've reaped the benefits
of their labour."
-Many of the Samaritans of that city
-believed in Him
-because of the woman's witnessing that
-"He told me everything I did."
-So when the Samaritans came to Him
-they asked Him to remain with
them
-and He stayed two days.
-And many more believed
because of His word
and said to the woman
-"We no longer believe because
of what you said.
-Now we've heard for ourselves
-and know this man is truly
the world's Saviour."
-After two days He went to Galilee
-for Jesus had witnessed that a prophet has
no honour in his own country.
-Coming to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed
Him
-having seen what He did in Jerusalem at
the feast.
-He came again to Cana of Galilee
-where He'd made the water wine.
-A royal official was there
-whose son was sick at Capernaum.
-He asked if He'd come down and cure
His son
-who was about to die.
-Jesus said "Unless you see
signs and wonders
-you won't believe."
The royal official said "Sir, come
down before my child dies."
-Jesus said "Go, your son lives."
-The man believed Jesus' word
and went.
-As he went down, his servants
met him
-and told him his boy was
alive.
-He enquired at what hour he
was healed
-and they said "Yesterday at
1 p.m. the fever left him."
-The father knew it was the
exact hour that
-Jesus said "Your son lives."
-And he, and his whole
household believed.
-This was again a second sign
that Jesus did
-having come out of Judea into
Galilee.
(Chapter 4)
After this, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a
feast of the Jews.
-There, at the sheepgate, there's a pool
called Bethezda, having five porches.
-In them lay a multitude of the sick, blind,
lame and withered.
-One man had been there for 38 years.
-Jesus saw him lying, knew he'd been
there a long time
-and said "Do you want to become
whole?"
-The sick man replied "Sir I've no
one to put me
-into the water when it's troubled
-but while I'm coming
-another pushes in before me."
-Jesus said "Rise, take your mattress
and walk."
-Immediately the man became whole
-took up his mattress and walked.
-It was a Sabbath day.
-The Jews said to him
-"It's a Sabbath, therefore
unlawful for you to carry
your mattress."
-He replied "The one who made me
whole
-told me to take my mattress and
walk."
-They asked who'd told him
that
-but he didn't know
-because Jesus had withdrawn
into the crowd.
-Later Jesus found him in the Temple
and said
-"You've become whole
-sin no more
-lest something worse happens."
-The man went and told the
Jews that Jesus had healed
him.
-The Jews persecuted Jesus
-for doing these things on the
Sabbath.
-But Jesus said to them "My Father works 'til
now
-and I work."
-Because of this the Jews sought to kill
Him
-because He not only broke the Sabbath
-but also said that God was His Father
-making Himself equal to God.
-Jesus therefore said to them
-"I can do nothing by myself
-I can only do what I see my Father doing
-because whatever my Father does
-I do also.
-For my Father loves me
-and shows me everything He does
-and greater works He'll show me
-that you may marvel.
-For as the Father raises the dead and gives
them life
-so I also give life to whom I will.
-For the Father judges no one
-but has given all judgment to me
-that all men may honour me
-as they honour the Father.
-He who doesn't honour me
-doesn't honour the Father who
sent me.
-Whoever hears my word
-and believes the one who sent me
-has eternal life.
-He doesn't come into judgment
-but has passed out of death into
life.
-An hour comes and now is
-when the dead will hear my voice
-and live.
-As the Father has life in Himself
-so He gave me life to have in
myself
-and He's given me authority to
judge
-because I'm the Son of Man.
-Don't marvel at this, because
an hour comes
-when the dead will hear my
voice
-and come forth.
-Those having done good to a
resurrection of life,
-those having done evil to a
resurrection of judgment.
-I can't do anything from myself.
-As I hear I judge
-and my judgment's just
-because I seek not my will
-but the will of the one who sent
me.
-If I witness concerning myself,
my witness isn't true.
-There's another witnessing
concerning me
-and I know His witness is
true.
-You sent to John,
-and he witnessed to the truth.
-But I don't receive witness from man
-but I say these things that you may
be saved.
-John was a lamp burning and shining
-and you were willing to exult for
an hour
-in his light.
-But I have the greater
witness than John.
-For the works the Father's
given me to finish,
-the works which I do,
-bear witness that the
Father's sent me.
-And the Father who sent me
-has witnessed about me.
-Whose voice you've never
heard
-nor form you've seen.
-And you don't have His word
abiding in you
-because you don't believe
me.
-You search the scriptures
-because you think eternal
life's in them.
-They witness about me,
-and you won't come to me to
have life.
-I don't receive glory from
men
-but I know that you don't
have God's love in you.
-I've come in my Father's name
-and you don't receive me.
-If someone comes in his own
name you'll receive him.
-How can you believe, who
receive glory from one
another
-and seek not the glory from
the only God?
-Don't think I'll accuse you
to the Father.
-The one accusing you is
Moses in whom you hoped.
-If you believed Moses
-you'd have believed me
-because he wrote of me.
-But if you don't believe his
writings
-how will you believe me?"
(Chapter 5)
After this Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee.
-A large crowd followed because they saw
-the signs He did on the sick.
-He went up to the mountain
-and sat with His disciples.
-The Passover feast of the Jews was
near.
-Seeing a big crowd approaching He
said to Philip
-"Where can we buy loaves so they
can eat?"
-He said this to test him,
knowing what He was about to
do.
-Philip replied "Eight months' wages
wouldn't buy enough
-loaves so each could take a
little."
-Simon Peter's brother, the
disciple Andrew, said,
-"There's a lad here with five
loaves of barley and two
fish
-but what are these among so
many?"
-Jesus said "Make the men sit down."
-There was much grass in the place.
-About 5000 sat down.
-Jesus took the loaves
-and after giving thanks
-distributed them,
-likewise the fish, as much as
they wanted.
-When they were filled
-He told His disciples to gather the
leftovers
-so nothing was lost.
-They gathered and filled twelve
baskets
-with the fragments from the
five loaves.
-Seeing the sign He did,the men said
-"This is truly the prophet coming
into the world."
-Knowing they were about to
seize Him
-to make Him a king, He
-departed again to the
mountain alone.
-At evening His disciples went down to the sea
-got in a boat and crossed toward Capernaum.
-It was dark & Jesus hadn't come to them.
-A great wind blew and the sea was
roused.
-After rowing about three and a half
miles
-they saw Jesus walking on the sea
-toward the boat and they feared.
-But He said "I am (it is I),
fear not."
-They wished therefore to take
Him into the boat
-and immediately the boat
-was at the shore to which
they were heading.
-Next day the crowd, not finding Jesus or His
disciples,
-got into boats and went to Capernaum
searching for Jesus.
-Finding Him they said
-"Rabbi, when did you get here?"
-He said
-"You seek me not because you saw
signs
-but because you ate the loaves
and were satisfied.
-Don't work for perishable food
-but for food that remains to
eternal life
-which I, on whom God the
Father
-has placed His seal, (of
approval) will give you."
-They asked "To do the works of God, what
should we do?"
-Jesus replied, "The work of God is to
believe in me."
-They said "What sign will you do
-so we may see and believe you?
-Our fathers ate manna in the
desert, as it's been written
-'He gave them bread out of
heaven to eat.'"
-Jesus therefore said "Moses hasn't given you
bread from heaven
-but my Father gives you the true bread out
of heaven.
-For God's bread is the one (me) coming
down
-out of heaven and giving life to the
world."
-They therefore said "Lord always give
us this bread."
-Jesus said "I am the bread of life
-the one coming to me will never hunger or
thirst.
-But (as) I told you, you've seen me and
(still) don't believe.
-All the Father gives me will come
-and the one coming to me I'll never
cast outside
-because I've come down from heaven
-not to do my will
-but the will of the one who
sent me.
-His will is that I lose none
of all He's given me
-But raise it up in the last
day.
-My Father's will is that
-everyone seeing and believing
in me
-may have eternal life
-and I'll raise him in the
last day."
-The Jews therefore murmured (complained)
about Him
-because He said "I'm the bread having
come down out of heaven."
-They said "Isn't this Jesus, Joseph's
son?
-We know his father and mother.
-How can he say 'I've come down out
of heaven?'"
-Jesus said "Don't murmur with one another.
-No one can come to me unless the Father
who sent me
-should draw him
-and I'll raise him up on the last
day.
-It's written in the prophets
'They'll all be taught by God.'
(Isaiah 54:13)
-Everyone hearing from the Father,
and learning,
-comes to me.
-No one's seen the Father
-except the one being with God
(me).
-The one believing has eternal life.
-I am the bread of life.
-Your fathers ate manna in the desert and
died.
-I am the bread coming down out of
heaven
-so that anyone may eat of it and not
die.
-I am the living bread
-having come down out of heaven.
-Anyone eating this bread will
live forever.
-The bread's my flesh,
-which I'll give for the life
of the world."
-The Jews angrily argued among themselves
saying
-"How can he give us flesh to eat?"
-Jesus said "Unless you eat my flesh
-and drink my blood
-you have no life in you.
-Anyone eating my flesh
-and drinking my blood
-has eternal life
-and I'll raise him up
-in the last day.
-For my flesh is true food
-and my blood true drink.
-Anyone eating my flesh
-and drinking my blood
-remains in me
-and I in him.
-As the living Father sent me
-and I live because of the Father
-so anyone eating me
-will live because of me.
-This is the bread having come down out of
heaven.
-Your fathers ate (manna) and died, but
-anyone eating this bread (me) will live
forever."
-He said these things while teaching in a
synagogue in Capernaum.
-Many of His disciples said "This is a hard
word,
-who can hear (accept) it?"
-Knowing His disciples grumbled, Jesus
said,
-"This offends you?
-What if you see me ascending to
where I was at first?
-The Spirit gives life,
-the flesh profits nothing.
-The words I've spoken
-are Spirit and life.
-But some of you don't believe."
-For Jesus knew from the beginning
-who wouldn't believe
-and who'd betray Him.
-He continued, "Therefore I
told you that
-no one can come to me
-unless the Father has given him
to me."
-From then on many of His disciples
-went back and no longer walked with Him.
-Jesus said to the twelve
-"Do you want to leave me too?"
-Simon Peter replied
-"Lord to whom shall we go?
-You have words of eternal life.
-We've believed and know you're
the Holy One of God."
-Jesus said "I've chosen you,
the twelve,
-and one's a devil."
-He spoke of Judas, Simon
Iscariot's son,who was about
to betray Him.
(Chapter 6)
After this Jesus walked in Galilee
-avoiding Judea
-because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.
-The Jews' Feast of Tabernacles was
near.
-His brothers said "Go into Judea
-so your disciples may see your
works (miracles).
-No one works in secret
-who wants to be known openly.
-If you do these things
-manifest yourself to the
world."
-For His brothers didn't
believe in Him.
-He therefore said "My time's not arrived
-but your time's always right.
-The world can't hate you
-but it hates me
-because I witness that it's work's
evil.
-You go up to the feast,
-I'm not going to this feast
-because my time's not
fulfilled."
-So He remained in Galilee.
-But when His brothers went up to the feast
-He also went in secret.
-At the feast the Jews said "Where's that
man?"
-The crowds murmured about Him.
-Some said "He's a good man"
-others said "No, he deceives the
crowd."
-But no one spoke openly about Him
for fear of the Jews.
-In the middle of the feast
-Jesus went up to the Temple and taught.
-The Jews marvelled saying "How come such
learning without study?"
-Jesus answered "My teaching isn't mine,
-it's from He who sent me.
-Anyone wishing to do His will
-will know whether my teaching's
from God
-or if I speak from myself.
-The one speaking from himself
-seeks his own glory.
-But the one seeking the glory
of He who sent Him,
-is true
-and there's no
unrighteousness in Him.
-Moses gave you the Law
-yet none of you keep it.
-Why seek to kill me?"
-The crowd answered "You've got a demon.
-Who seeks to kill you?"
-Jesus said "I did one work and you all
marvel.
-Moses gave you circumcision (rather,
the fathers did)
-and you circumcise on the Sabbath.
-If a man's circumcised on the
Sabbath
-and Moses' Law isn't broken
-why are you angry with me
-for making a whole man
healthy on the Sabbath?
-Don't judge by mere
appearance but
-make a right judgment."
-Some Jerusalemites said "Isn't this the man
they seek to kill?
-He speaks openly and they say nothing!
-Maybe the rulers know that he's the
Christ.
-But we know where this man's from,
-when the Christ comes
-no one knows where He's from."
-Teaching in the Temple, Jesus cried out
-"You know me and where I'm from.
-I haven't come of my own accord
-but the one who sent me's true
-whom you don't know.
-I know Him because I'm from Him
-and He sent me."
-They therefore sought to arrest Him
-but no one touched Him
-because His hour hadn't yet come.
-But many of the crowd believed in Him,
saying
-"When Christ comes will He do more
signs (miracles)
-than this man's done?"
-Hearing the crowd murmuring these things
about Him
-the Pharisees sent their attendants and
chief priests
-to arrest Him.
-Jesus therefore said "Yet a little time
I'm with you
-then I go to the one who sent me.
-You'll seek and not find me
-and where I am you can't come."
-The Jews therefore said to themselves
-"Where's he going, that we won't find him,
-to our people scattered among the Greeks,
-and teach the Greeks?
-What did he mean by saying
-'You'll look for me and not find
me' and
-'Where I am you can't come?'"
-On the last and greatest day of the feast
Jesus
-stood and cried out "If anyone thirsts let
him come to me and drink.
-Anyone believing in me, as the scripture
said,
-streams of living water will flow from
within him."
-He said this about the Spirit
-whom those believing in Him
-hadn't yet received
-because He was not yet
glorified.
-Some of the crowd hearing this said
-"This man's truly the Prophet."
-Others said "This man's the Christ."
-But others said "Shall Christ come from
Galilee?
-Doesn't the scripture say the Christ
will come
-from David's family and
-from Bethlehem where David
lived?"
-Therefore there arose a division in the crowd
because of Him.
-Some wanted to arrest Him
-but no one touched Him.
-The attendants (Temple guards) returned to
the
-chief priests and Pharisees who asked
-why they didn't bring Him.
-They replied "No man ever spoke like
this man."
-The Pharisees said "Are you also
deceived?
-Has any ruler or Pharisee believed
Him?
-But this crowd, not knowing the
Law,
-are cursed."
-One of them, Nicodemus, who came to Him
by night
-said "Does our Law judge anyone
-without first hearing him and what
he does?"
-They replied "Are you from
Galilee?
-Search (the scriptures) and
you'll see no
-prophet comes from Galilee."
-Then each went to his own home.
(Chapter 7)
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
-At dawn He arrived again at the Temple,
-all the people came to Him
-and sitting, He taught them.
-The Scribes and Pharisees lead a woman
-having been caught in adultery
-and standing her in their midst, said
-"This woman's been caught in the act of
committing adultery.
-In the Law, Moses commanded she be
stoned,
-what do you say?"
-They were tempting Him in order
to accuse Him.
-But Jesus stooping down
-wrote with His finger in the earth.
-As they continued questioning Him
-He stood erect and said
-"The one of you who's sinless
-let him cast the first stone on
her."
-Stooping down again,He wrote in
the earth.
-And those hearing went away
one by one
-beginning with the eldest
-and He was left alone
-with the woman in the
midst.
-Standing erect Jesus said to
her
-"Woman where are they,
-has no one condemned you?"
-She said "No one sir."
-So Jesus said "Neither do I
condemn you
-go, from now on, no longer
sin."
-Again Jesus said "I am the light of the world
-anyone following me
-won't walk in the darkness
-but will have the light of life."
-The Pharisees said "You witness about
yourself
-and your witness isn't true."
-Jesus said "Even if I witness about myself
-my witness is true
-because I know where I came from
-and where I go.
-But you know neither where I come
from or where I go.
-You judge according to the flesh
(by human standards),
-I judge no one.
-But if I judge, my judgment's
true
-because I'm not alone,
-I'm with the Father who sent
me.
-Even in your Law it's written
that
-the witness of two men's true.
-I witness concerning myself
together with
-the Father who sent me."
-They said "Where's your father?"
-Jesus answered "You know neither me
-or my Father.
-If you knew me
-you'd know my Father."
-He said this in the Treasury
-as He taught in the Temple
-and no one seized Him
-because His hour hadn't come.
-He therefore said "I go and you'll seek me
-and you'll die in your sin.
-Where I go you can't come."
-The Jews said "Will he kill himself
-because he says 'Where I go you can't
come.'"
-He said "You're of the things below
-I am of the things above,
-you're of this world
-I am not of this world.
-I said before that you'd die in your
sins
-for if you don't believe that I am
-you'll die in your sins."
-They said "Who are you?"
-He replied "Why speak to you at all?
-I've many things to speak and judge about
you
-but the One who sent me's true
-and what I heard from Him
-I speak to the world."
-They didn't know He spoke to them of the
Father.
-Jesus therefore said "When you lift me up
-then you'll know that I am (the Christ)
-and (that) from myself I do nothing,
-but I speak as taught by my Father.
-The One who sent me's with me,
-He didn't leave me alone
-because I always do what's
pleasing to Him."
-As He said these things, many believed in
Him.
-He therefore said to the Jews who believed
Him
-"If you continue in my word
-truly you're my disciples
-and you'll know the truth
-and the truth will set you free."
-They said "We're Abraham's seed
-we've never been enslaved to anyone.
-How can you say we'll become free?"
-Jesus said "Everyone doing sin
-is a slave to sin.
-The slave doesn't remain in the house
forever
-but the son does.
-If therefore the Son sets you free
-you'll really be free.
-I know you're Abraham's seed
-but you seek to kill me
-because my word finds no room
in you.
-What I've seen with the
Father I speak
-and you do what you've heard
from your father."
-They said "Our father's Abraham."
-Jesus said "If you're Abraham's children
-you'd do his works.
-But you seek to kill me
-a man who's spoken the truth
-which I heard from God.
-Abraham didn't do this.
-You do the works of your
father."
-They said "We're not born of fornication.
-We have one Father, God."
-Jesus replied "If God was your Father
-you'd have loved me
-for I came from God
-and am here.
-I didn't send myself
-but God sent me.
-Why can't you understand my speech?
It's
-because you can't bear my word.
-Your father's the devil
-and you want to do his desires.
-He was a murderer from the
beginning
-who didn't stand in the truth
-because no truth's in him.
-When he lies it's his normal
language
-because he's a liar
-and the father of lies.
-But because I tell the truth
-you don't believe me.
-Which of you convicts me of sin?
-If I tell the truth
-why don't you believe me?
-He who's of God
-hears God's words.
-You can't hear
-because you're not of God."
-The Jews replied
-"Aren't we right in saying
-you're a Samaritan
-and have a demon?"
-Jesus replied
-"I have no demon
-but I honour the Father
-and you dishonour me.
-But I don't seek my own glory,
-there's One who seeks it
-and He'll be the judge.
-Anyone who keeps (obeys) my words
-shall never see death."
-The Jews said
-"Now we know you've got a demon.
-Abraham and the prophets died and you say
-If 'Anyone keeps my words
-he'll never die.'
-Are you greater than our father
Abraham
-who died as did the prophets?
-Who do you make yourself out to
be?"
-Jesus replied
-"If I glorify myself
-my glory's nothing.
-The Father glorifies me
-whom you call your God.
-You haven't known Him.
-But I know Him.
-If I said I didn't
-I'd be a liar like you
-but I know Him
-and keep His word.
-Your father Abraham was glad to see my
day.
-He saw and rejoiced."
-The Jews said
-"You're not 50 years old
-and you've seen Abraham?"
-Jesus replied "Before Abraham was I
am."
-They took up stones to cast on Him
-but Jesus was hidden
-and went out of the Temple.
(Chapter 9)
-Passing along, He saw a man blind from birth.
-His disciples asked whether it was his sin
-or his parents' sin that caused it.
-Jesus replied "Neither sinned, (it
happened)
-so that God's works might be manifested
in him.
-I must do the works of the One who
sent me
-while it's day.
-When night comes, no one can
work.
-While I'm in the world
-I am the light of the world."
-Then He spat on the ground
-made clay,
-put it on the blind man's eyes and
said
-"Go wash in the Pool of Siloam
(meaning Sent)."
-He did and received his sight.
-His neighbours and those who'd
seen him begging,
-said "Wasn't he sitting and
begging?"
-Some said "Yes."
-Others said "No it's someone
like him."
-The man said "I'm he."
-They asked "How were your eyes opened?"
-He replied "The man named Jesus
-made clay, anointed my eyes,
-told me to wash in the Pool of
Siloam,
-I did and received my sight."
-They said "Where is he?"
-He replied "I don't know."
-They led him to the Pharisees.
-Jesus had healed him on the Sabbath.
-The Pharisees asked him again how he
got his sight.
-He replied as before.
-Some Pharisees therefore said
-"This man's not from God
-because he doesn't keep the
Sabbath."
-Others said "How can a sinful man
do such signs?"
-So there was a division among
them.
-They therefore asked the blind man again
-"What do you say about him?
-It was your eyes he opened."
-He said "He's a prophet."
-The Jews didn't believe he'd been
born blind
-until they asked his parents how he
got his sight.
-They replied "He's our son
-and he was born blind
-but we don't know how he got
his sight
-or who opened his eyes.
-Ask him, he's of age,
-he'll speak for himself."
-His parents said this because
they feared the Jews
-who'd already agreed that
anyone who acknowledged him
-to be the Christ
-would be put out of the
Synagogue.
-The Jews asked the man a second
time
-saying "Give glory to God,
-we know this man (Jesus) is
sinful."
-He replied "I don't know if he's
sinful
-all I know is that I was blind
and now I see."
-They said "What did he do to you,
-how did he open your eyes?"
-He answered "I told you already
and you didn't hear,
-why do you want to hear again?
-Do you want to become his
disciples?"
-They reviled him saying "You're
his disciple.
-We are Moses' disciples.
-We know God spoke through
Moses
-but we don't know where this
man's from."
-He replied "What a marvel that
you don't know where he's from,
-yet he opened my eyes.
-We know God doesn't hear sinful
men.
-But if anyone fears
(repents/honours) God
-and does His will
-God hears him.
-Never since the world began
-has it been heard that anyone
-opened the eyes of a man born
blind.
-If this man weren't from God
-he couldn't do anything."
-They replied "You were born in
utter sins
-and you teach us?"
-And they cast him outside.
-Jesus heard, found him and said "Do you
believe in the Son of Man (me)?"
-He answered "Who is he sir, that I may
believe in Him?"
-Jesus said "You've seen Him, it's me
talking to you."
-He said "Lord, I believe" and
worshipped Him.
-Jesus said "For judgment I've come
into this world
-so that the blind may see
-and the seeing may become blind."
-Some Pharisees who heard this said "Are we
born blind?"
-Jesus said "If you were blind you'd have no
sin.
-But now you say 'We see,' your sin
remains."
(Chapter 9)
"Truly I say to you the one not entering by the
gate of the sheep pen
-but climbs in another way
-is a thief and a robber.
-But the shepherd enters by the gate
-the gatekeeper opens to him,
-the sheep hear his voice
-and his own sheep he calls by name
-and leads them out.
-When he's put forth all his own
-he goes in front of them,
-his sheep follow
-because they know his voice.
-They won't follow a stranger
-but will flee from him
-because they do not know
his voice."
-Jesus told them this parable
-but they didn't understand it.
-Jesus therefore said again, "Truly I am the
door of the sheep,
-all who came before me are thieves and
robbers
-but the sheep didn't hear them.
-I am the door,
-anyone entering through me will be
saved
-and will go in and out
-and find pasture.
-The thief comes only to steal and kill and
destroy.
-I came that they may have life
-and have it abundantly.
-I am the good shepherd,
-the good shepherd lays down His
life for the sheep.
-The hireling,
-not being a shepherd who owns
the sheep
-sees the wolf coming, leaves
the sheep and flees
-and the wolf seizes and
scatters them.
-Because he's a hireling he
doesn't care about the
sheep.
-I am the good shepherd
-I know mine
-and mine know me
-as the Father knows me
-and I know the Father.
-And I lay down my life for the
sheep.
-I have other sheep not of this fold
-I must bring them also,
-they'll hear my voice
-and there'll be one flock and
one shepherd.
-Therefore the Father loves me
-because I lay down my life
-that I may take it again.
-No one takes it from me
-but I lay it down of my own accord,
-I've authority to lay it down
-and authority to take it again.
-This commandment I received
from my Father."
-There was a division again among the Jews
because of these words.
-Many of them said "He has a demon and raves
why listen to him?"
-Others said "These aren't the words of
one demon possessed,
-can a demon open the eyes of blind
men?"
-It was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem
in winter time.
-Jesus walked in Solomon's Porch in the
Temple.
-The Jews surrounded Him and said
-"How long will you keep us in suspense,
-if you're the Christ tell us
plainly."
-Jesus answered "I told you and you
don't believe.
-The works I do in my Father's
name,
-these witness about me
-but you don't believe
-because you don't belong to
my sheep.
-My sheep hear my voice,
-I know them,
-they follow me,
-I give them eternal life,
they'll never perish and
-no one shall seize them out
of my hand.
-My Father who's given (them)
to me
-is greater than all
-and no one can seize (them)
out of His hand.
-I and the Father are one."
-The Jews lifted stones to stone Him.
-Jesus replied "I showed you many good works
of the Father,
-for which of them do you stone me?"
-The Jews answered "We don't stone you
for good works
-but for blasphemy
-because you, a (mere) man
-make yourself God."
-Jesus answered "Isn't it
written in your Law
-'I said you are gods.' (Psalm
82:6).
-If He called them gods to
whom God's word came, and
scripture cannot be broken,
-do you say of me
-whom the Father sanctified
-and sent into the world,
-'You're blaspheming' because
I said I'm God's Son?
-If I'm not doing my Father's
works
-then don't believe me.
-But if I am (doing His works)
-even if you don't believe
me
-believe the works
-so you'll know and continue
to know
-that the Father's in me and
-I'm in the Father."
-They sought to arrest Him again.
-But He went forth out of their hand.
-He went away across the Jordan to where John
at first baptised and remained there.
-Many came and said "John did no sign
-but the many things John said about this
man were true."
-And many believed in Him there.
(Chapter 10)
-A man named Lazarus was sick. He was from
Bethany,
-the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
-It was Mary who anointed the Lord with
ointment
-and wiped His feet with her hair,
-whose brother was sick.
-The sisters therefore sent to Jesus
saying
-"Lord the one you love is sick."
-Hearing this Jesus said
-"This sickness isn't to death, but
for God's glory
-so God's Son may be glorified
through it."
-Jesus loved Martha and Mary and
Lazarus.
-Hearing he was sick, He
didn't come for two days.
-Then He said to His disciples "Let's go
to Judea again."
-The disciples said "Rabbi, the Jews
were seeking to stone you
-and are you going there again?"
-Jesus said "Aren't there 12 hours
in the day?
-If anyone walks in the day he
doesn't stumble
-because he sees the light of
this world
-but anyone walking in the
night stumbles
-because the light's not
in him."
-Then He said "Lazarus our friend's
fallen asleep
-but I'm going to awaken him."
-The disciples said "If he's fallen
asleep he'll be healed."
-Now Jesus had spoken of his
death.
-But His disciples thought He
spoke of sleep
-so He told them plainly
"Lazarus is dead
-and I rejoice because of
you
-that you may believe
-but let's go to him."
-Thomas, called the twin by his fellow
disciples, said
-"Let's go that we may die with Him."
-Arriving, Jesus found Lazarus had
been in the tomb 4 days.
-Bethany was less than 2 miles from
Jerusalem.
-Many of the Jews had come to Martha
and Mary
-to console them about their
brother.
-Therefore Martha, hearing Jesus
was coming, met Him
-but Mary sat in the house.
-Martha said to Jesus "Lord, if you had been
here
-my brother wouldn't have died.
-I know that whatever you ask of God,
He'll give you."
-Jesus said "Your brother will rise
again."
-Martha said "I know he'll rise at the
last day in the resurrection."
-Jesus said "I AM the resurrection
and the life
-anyone believing in me, even if
he dies, will live
-and everyone living and
believing in me will never
die.
-Do you believe this?"
-She said "Yes, Lord, I've
believed that you're the
Christ, God's Son (the one)
coming into the world."
-She went and called her sister Mary saying,
-"The teacher's here and calls you."
-So she rose quickly and came to Him.
-He'd not yet reached the village
-but was still where He'd met
Martha.
-Therefore the Jews with her in
the house
-consoling her, seeing Mary rise
quickly and depart,
-followed, thinking "She's
gone to the tomb to weep."
-So Mary, coming to Jesus fell
at his feet
-saying, "Lord if you'd been
here, my brother wouldn't
have died."
-Seeing her, and the Jews with her, weeping,
Jesus
-groaned in His Spirit,
-was troubled and said
-"Where have you put him?"
-They said "Lord come and see."
-Jesus wept.
-The Jews therefore said "See
how He loved him."
-But some said "Couldn't this
man who opened the eyes of
the blind have kept this man
from dying?"
-Again groaning in Himself
-Jesus came to the tomb.
-It was a cave with a stone on it.
-Jesus said "Lift the stone."
-Martha, the dead man's sister,
said,
-"Lord he'll smell, being dead
four days."
-Jesus said "Didn't I tell you that if you
believe
-you'll see God's glory?"
-So they lifted the stone.
-Jesus lifted His eyes up and said
-"Father, thanks for hearing me,
-I know you always hear me
-but because of the crowd
standing around
-I said it, that they might
believe you sent me."
-Then He cried with a loud voice
-"Lazarus come out."
-The dead man came out,
-having been bound hand and
foot with bandages
-with a napkin round his face.
-Jesus said to them "Loosen him and
let him go."
-Therefore many of the Jews who'd come to
Mary
-seeing what he did
-believed in Him.
-But some went and told the
Pharisees what He'd done.
-So the chief priest and Pharisees
assembled a council and said
-"What can we do
-because this man does many signs?
-If we let him go on like this
-everyone will believe in him
-and the Romans will come and
take away
-our place (Temple) and
nation."
-Caiaphas, the high priest that year said
-"You know nothing at all,
-don't you realise that it's expedient
for us
-that one man should die for the
people.
-than that the whole nation perish?"
-He didn't say this of his own
accord
-but being high priest that year
he prophesied
-that Jesus was about to die
for the nation.
-And not for the nation only
-but that God's children
having been scattered,
-He might gather into one.
-So from that day they took counsel
-how to kill Him.
-So Jesus no longer walked among the
Jews
-but went into the country near the
desert
-to the city of Ephraim
-and remained with His disciples.
-The Jews' Passover was near
-and many went up to Jerusalem
out of the country
-before the Passover to
purify themselves.
-They sought Jesus and said to
each other,
-standing in the Temple, "Do
you think He'll come to
the feast?"
-The chief priests and Pharisees
had commanded
-that if anyone knew His
whereabouts
-they should be told
-so they could arrest Him.
(Chapter 11)
So Jesus, six days before the Passover
-came to Bethany where Lazarus was
-whom Jesus had raised out of the dead.
-So they made a supper for Him,
-Martha served,
-and Lazarus was one of those
reclining with Him.
-Mary took about a half litre of
pure spikenard,
-an expensive ointment,
-anointed Jesus' feet,
-and wiped off His feet with
her hair
-filling the house with the
fragrance of the ointment.
-Judas Iscariot, His disciple who
was about to betray Him,
-said "Why wasn't this ointment
sold
-for a (labourer's) year's wages
-and the money given to the
poor?"
-He said this, not that he
cared about the poor,
-but because he was a thief
-and carried the bag (with the
money in it).
-So Jesus said "Leave her alone so she
may keep it
-ready for my burial.
-The poor are always with you
-but you won't always have me."
-The great crowd of the Jews
-knew He was there
-and they came, not because of Jesus
only
-but to see Lazarus, whom He'd
raised from the dead.
-But the chief priests took
counsel
-to kill Lazarus also.
-because many of the Jews,
-because of him went
-and believed in Jesus.
Next day a big crowd coming to the feast
-hearing Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
-took branches of palm trees,
-went out to meet Him and cried out
-"Hosanna, blessed is the one coming in
the Lord's name,
-even the King of Israel."
-Jesus, having found a young ass,
sat on it
-as it's written, "Fear not
daughter of Zion
-behold your King comes
-sitting on a foal of an ass."
-His disciples didn't understand this at
first
-but when Jesus was glorified
-they remembered these things had
been written about Him
-and that they'd done these things
to Him.
-The crowd who was with Him when He
called Lazarus
-out of the tomb and raised him from
the dead
-witnessed (to this fact).
-So the crowd met Him
-because they heard He'd done
this sign.
-The Pharisees said to themselves
-"See, we're getting nowhere
-(all) the world's gone after him."
-Some Greeks were going up to worship at the
feast.
-They asked Philip from Bethsaida in Galilee
-if they could see Jesus.
-Philip told Andrew and they both told
Jesus.
-Jesus said "The hour I'm glorified
has come.
-Unless a grain of wheat falls into
the ground
-and dies, it remains alone (a
single seed).
-But if it 'dies'
-it bears much fruit (many
seeds).
-Love your life and you'll lose it
-hate your life in this world
-and you'll keep it to eternal
life.
-If anyone serves me
-let him follow me
-and where I AM
-my servant will be.
-If anyone serves me
-The (my) Father will honour
him.
-Now my soul's troubled
-shall I say Father save me out of this
hour?
-(No) for this reason I came to this hour,
-Father, glorify your name."
-A voice from heaven said
-"I've glorified it
-and will glorify it again."
-The crowd standing and hearing
said
-"It thundered."
-Others said "An angel's
spoken to Him."
-Jesus said "This voice is for your
benefit, not mine.
-Judgment of this world is now.
-Now this world's ruler shall be
cast outside.
-And if I'm lifted out of the
earth
-I'll draw all men to myself."
-He said this signifying what kind
of death
-He was about to die.
-The crowd said "The Law says Christ will
remain forever,
-how can you say 'The Son of Man must be
lifted up'?
-Who is he?"
-Jesus said "Yet a little time the
light's among you,
-walk while you have the light
-lest darkness overtakes you.
-Anyone walking in the darkness
-doesn't know where he's going.
-While you have the light,
believe in it
-so you may become sons of
light."
-After Jesus said this He departed
-and was hidden from them.
-But having done so many signs before them
-they still didn't believe in Him
-fulfilling the word of prophet Isaiah
-"Lord, who's believed our report
-and to whom's the Lord's arm been
revealed?"
-So they couldn't believe, because Isaiah
said elsewhere
-"He's blinded their eyes
-and hardened their heart
-that they might not see with the eyes
-and understand with the heart
-and turn and I'll cure them."
-Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus'
glory
-and spoke about Him.
-Nevertheless many rulers believed in Him
-but because of the Pharisees
-didn't confess (their faith)
-lest they be put out of the synagogue
-for they loved men's glory
-more than God's glory.
-But Jesus cried out "The one believing in me
-doesn't believe in me
-but in the One who sent me.
-The one seeing me
-sees the One who sent me.
-I've come as a light into the world
-that everyone believing in me
-may not remain in darkness.
-If anyone hears my words
-and doesn't keep them
-I don't judge him
-for I didn't come to judge the world
-but to save it.
-Whoever rejects me
-and doesn't receive my words
-will find it's my word
-that will judge him in the
last day.
-I didn't speak of my own accord
-but the Father who sent me
-commanded me what to say
-and how to say it.
-And I know His commandment
-is eternal life
-so whatever I say
-is just what the Father's
told me to say."
(Chapter 12)
-Now before the Passover Feast
-Jesus, knowing the hour had come
-for Him to leave the world
-and go to the Father,
-having loved His own in the world
-He loved them to the end.
-During supper,
-as the devil had now put it into the
heart of Judas Iscariot
-to betray Him,
-knowing the Father had given
everything into His hands,
-that He'd come from God,
-and was returning to Him,
-He rose from the supper,
-laid aside His (outer)
garments,
-girded Himself with a towel,
-put water in a basin,
-began to wash the disciples'
feet,
-and wipe them with the towel
with which He was girded.
-Coming to Simon Peter, he said
-"Lord are you going to wash my feet?"
-Jesus said "You don't understand
what I'm doing now
-but you will later."
-Peter said "You'll never wash
my feet."
-Jesus said "Unless I wash you,
you've no part in me."
-Simon Peter said "Lord, not my
feet only,
-but my hands and head."
-Jesus said "One who's had a bath,
-needs only to wash his feet,
-his whole body's clean,
-and you are clean, but not
everyone of you"
-for He knew the one betraying
Him.
-Therefore He said "Not every
one was clean."
-When He'd washed their feet
-replaced His clothes and reclined again, He
said
-"Do you know what I've done to you?
-You call me Teacher and the Lord
-and rightly so for I am.
-If therefore I, the Lord and
Teacher
-washed your feet
-you ought also to wash each
other's feet.
-I gave an example that as I
did to you
-you also may do.
-A servant's not greater than his
lord
-nor the one sent
-greater than his sender.
-If you know these things
-you'll be blessed if you do them.
-I'm not referring to all of you,
-I know whom I've chosen
-but (this is) that the scripture may be
fulfilled
-(Ps 41:9) 'The one eating my bread,
lifted up his heel against me.'
-I'm telling you now before it happens
-that you might believe that I AM
(He)
-when it happens.
-Whoever receives anyone I send
-receives me.
-And whoever receives me
-receives the One who sent
me."
-Saying these things Jesus was troubled in His
Spirit
-and witnessed saying "One of you'll betray
me."
-The disciples looked at each other
-uncertain of who He meant.
-One of them, the disciple Jesus loved
-was reclining next to Him.
-Simon Peter motioned to him and
said
-"Ask Him who He means."
-Leaning back against Jesus he
asked
-"Lord, who is it?"
-Jesus answered "The one to whom I'll give
this piece of bread
-when we dip it in the dish."
-Dipping the bread He gave it to Judas
Iscariot.
-After the bread, Satan entered him.
-Jesus therefore said to him "What
you (have to) do, do quickly."
-No one at the meal knew why Jesus
said this to him.
-Some thought, since Judas had
the money bag,
-that Jesus told him to buy
what they needed for the
feast
-or to give something to the
poor.
-As soon as he'd taken the bread he went
out.
-And it was night.
-When he'd left Jesus said "Now I'm glorified
-and God's glorified in me.
-If God's glorified in me
-God will glorify me in Himself
-immediately.
-Children, I'll be with you only a little
longer,
-you'll look for me and as I said to the
Jews
-I also say to you
-that where I go you can't come.
-A new commandment I give you
-that you love one another.
-As I've loved you,
-you are to love one another.
-All men will know you're my
disciples
-if you have love for each
other."
-Simon Peter said "Lord where are you going?"
-Jesus answered "Where I go you can't follow
now
-but you'll follow later."
-Peter said "Why can't I follow you yet?
-I'll lay down my life for you."
-Jesus answered "Will you lay down
your life for me?
-The cock won't crow 'til you've
denied me three times."
(Chapter 13)
-"Let not your heart be troubled
-believe in God
-believe also in me.
-In my Father's house
-are many abodes (rooms - mansions).
-If it weren't so I'd have told you
-because I go to prepare a place
for you.
-And if I go to prepare a place for you
-I'll come again
-and receive you to myself,
-that where I am
-you may be also.
-And where I go you know the way."
-Thomas said "Lord we don't
where you're going.
-How do we know the way?"
-Jesus said "I am the way
-the truth
-and the life.
-No one comes to the Father
except through me.
-If you'd known me
-you'd have known my Father.
-From now on you know and have
seen Him."
-Philip said "Lord show us the
Father
-and we'll be satisfied."
-Jesus said "I AM with you so long and you
don't know me?
-If you've seen me
-you've seen the Father.
-How can you say 'Show us the Father'?
-Don't you believe that I'm in the
Father
-and the Father is in me?
-The words I speak to you aren't
(just) mine
-but the Father remaining in me
does His works.
-Believe me that I'm in the Father
-and the Father in me
-or else believe me because of the
works themselves.
-Anyone believing in me
-will do the works I do
-and he'll do greater ones
-because I'm going to the
Father.
-Whatever you ask in my name
-I'll do
-that the Father may be glorified
-in the Son.
-If you love me
-you'll keep my commandments
-and I'll ask the Father
-and He'll give you another
(comforter)
-to be with you forever,
-the Spirit of Truth
-which the world can't
receive
-because it neither sees nor
knows Him.
-But you know Him because He
-remains with you
-and will be in you.
-I won't leave you orphans,
-I'm coming to you.
-Soon the world won't see me
-but you will,
-because I live
-you'll also live.
-In that (resurrection) Day
you'll know
-I'm in my Father
-you're in me
-and I'm in you.
-Anyone having and keeping my commandments
-loves me
-and will be loved by my Father
-and I'll love him
-and show myself to him."
-Judas (not Iscariot) said "Lord how is it
that
-you'll reveal yourself to us and
-not to the world?"
-Jesus said "If anyone loves me
-he'll keep my word and
-my Father will love him
-and we will come to him
-and make our abode with him.
-Anyone not loving me
-won't keep my words.
-And the word you hear
-isn't mine,
-but the Father's who sent me.
-I've spoken these things while still
remaining with you
-but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit
-which the Father will send in my
name,
-He'll teach you everything
-and remind you of everything
I've told you.
-My peace I leave with you
-my peace I give you.
-I don't give as the world does.
-Don't let your heart be troubled or
fearful.
-You heard me say I go
-and come again, to you.
-If you loved me
-you'd have rejoiced that I'm
-going to the Father
-because He's greater than me.
-I've told you before it happens
-so when it does
-you may believe.
-I'll no longer speak much with you
-for this world's ruler's coming.
-He has no power over me
-but that the world may know
-that I love the Father
-I do as He commanded me.
-Arise, let's leave."
(Chapter 14)
"I am the true vine
-and my Father's the vinedresser.
-Every branch in me
-not bearing fruit
-He takes (removes).
-Bearing fruit
-He prunes
-so it will bear more fruit.
-You're clean because of the word I've spoken
to you.
-Remain in me
-and I in you.
-As the branch can't bear fruit
-unless it remains in the vine
-neither can you unless you remain in me.
-I am the vine
-you're the branches,
-anyone remaining in me
-and I in him
-bears much fruit
-because apart from me, you can do
nothing.
-Unless you remain in me
-you'll be cast out like a branch
-which dries,
-is gathered,
-cast into the fire
-and burnt.
-If you remain in me
-and my words remain in you
-ask whatever you wish
-and it will happen to you.
-By this my Father's glorified
-that you bear much fruit
-(thus) proving you're my disciples.
-As the Father loved me
-I also loved you,
-remain in my love.
-If you keep my commandments
-you'll remain in my love
-as I've kept my Father's commandment
-and remain in His love.
-I've spoken these things to you
-that my joy may be in you
-and that your joy may be full.
-This is my commandment
-that you love one another
-as I've loved you.
-No one has greater love, than
-to lay down his life for his friends.
-You're my friends
-if you do what I command you.
-I no longer call you servants
-because a servant doesn't
know what his master does.
-But I've called you friends
-because everything I've heard
from my Father
-I've made known to you.
-You didn't choose me
-but I chose you
-and appointed you
-to go and bear fruit
-that whatever you ask the Father
in my name
-He may give you.
-These things I command you
-that you love one another.
-If the world hates you
-you know it hated me first.
-If you were of the world
-it would have loved you.
-But because you're not of the world
-but I chose you out of the world
-it therefore hates you.
-Remember my word to you
-'A servant isn't greater than his lord.'
-If they persecuted me
-they'll also persecute you.
-If they kept my word
-they'll also keep yours.
-But they'll do all these things to you
-because of my name,
-because they don't know who sent me.
-If I hadn't come and spoken to them
-they wouldn't have had sin
-but now they've no cloak for sin.
-Whoever hates me
-hates my Father also.
-If I hadn't done among them
-the works no other man did
-they wouldn't have had sin.
-But now they have
-seen and hated
-both me and my Father.
-But this fulfills what's written in the Law
(Ps 35:19)
-'They hated me freely.'
-When the Comforter comes
-whom I'll send to you from the Father
-the Spirit of Truth
-who proceeds from the Father,
-He'll witness about me.
-And you'll also witness
-because you've been with me
from the beginning."
(Chapter 15)
"I've spoken these things to you
-so you won't be shocked (by what's going to
happen to you).
-They'll put you out of the synagogue.
-A time's coming when anyone who kills you
-will think he's offering a service to
God.
-They'll do these things because
-they know neither the Father nor
me.
-I've told you this, that when the hour (of
persecution) comes
-you'll remember I told you.
-I didn't tell you these things from the
beginning
-because I was with you.
-But now I am going to the One who sent me
-and not one of you asks
-'Where are you going?'
-But because I've spoken these
things to you
-grief has filled your heart.
-But the truth is that it's
expedient for you
-that I go away.
-If I don't, the Comforter won't
come to you
-but if I go I'll send Him to
you.
-When He comes He'll reprove the world of
-sin
-righteousness
-and judgment.
-Of sin
-because they didn't believe in me.
-Of righteousness
-because I'm going to the Father
-and you'll no longer see me.
-Of judgment
-because the ruler of this world has
been judged.
-I've many things yet to tell you
-but you can't bear them now.
-But when the Spirit of Truth comes
-He'll guide you into all truth
-for He won't speak from Himself
-but what He hears He'll speak.
-And He'll announce what's yet to
come.
-He'll glorify me by taking
what's mine
-and declaring it to you.
-Everything the Father has is mine.
-That's why I said He (the Holy Spirit) will
take what's mine
-and announce it to you.
-Shortly you'll no longer see me
-but a little later you will
-because I go to the Father."
-Some of His disciples discussed this
-but couldn't work out what He meant.
-Knowing they wanted to question Him
-Jesus said "You'll weep and
lament
-and the world will rejoice,
-you'll grieve,
-but it'll be turned to joy.
-A woman giving birth has grief
-but when she brings forth the child
-she no longer remembers the
distress
-because of the joy that a man was
born into the world.
-Likewise you have grief now
-but I'll see you again
-and your heart will rejoice
-and no one will take the joy from
you.
-In that day you'll ask me nothing.
-Whatever you ask the Father
-in my name He'll give you.
-Until now you've asked nothing in
my name.
-Ask and you'll receive
-that your joy may be full.
-I've spoken these things in parables
-but soon I'll tell you plainly
concerning the Father.
-Then you'll ask in my name
-but I don't say I'll request the
Father for you
-for He loves you
-because you've loved me
-and believed that I came
from God.
-I've come forth out of the Father
-into the world
-and now I leave it
-and go (return) to the Father."
-His disciples said "Now you speak plainly
not figuratively.
-Now we know that
-you know everything and that
-you need no one to ask you
questions.
-Therefore we believe you came
forth from God."
-Jesus answered
-"Do you believe?
-The hour is coming and has come
-when you'll be scattered
-each to his own (home)
-and you'll leave me alone.
-Yet I'm not alone
-because the Father's with
me.
-I've told you this so that in me
-you may have peace.
-In the world you'll have
distress
-but cheer up, I've overcome
the world."
(Chapter 16)
After this, Jesus lifted up His eyes to heaven
and said
-"Father, the hour's come,
-glorify your Son
-that I may glorify you.
-For you gave me authority over all
flesh
-so that I may give eternal life
-to all you've given me.
-And this is eternal life
-that they may know you
-the only true God
-and Jesus Christ whom you
sent.
-I glorified you on earth
-finishing the work you gave me to do.
-Now Father glorify me
-with the glory I had with you
-before the world began.
-I manifested your name
-to the men you gave me
-out of the world.
-They were yours
-you gave them to me
-and they've kept your word.
-They know that everything you've
given me
-comes from you
-because the words you gave me
-I've given them.
-They've received them
-and (they) know truly that I
came forth from you
-and they believed that you sent
me.
-I request (pray) for them.
-I don't request for the world
-but for those you gave me
-because they're yours.
-All I have is yours and
-all you have is mine
-and I've been glorified in them.
-I'm no longer in the world
-but they are
-and I come to you.
-Holy Father, keep (protect) them
in your name
-which you've given me
-that they may be one
-as we are.
-When I was with them
-I kept them in your name
-which you've given me
-and I guarded (them)
-so not one perished
-except the son of perdition
(Judas)
-so that the scripture might be
fulfilled.
-But now I come to you
-and I speak these things in the
world
-that they may have my joy
-fulfilled in them.
-I've given them your word
-and the world hated them
-because they're not of the world
(just)
-as I'm not of the world.
-I don't request you to take them out
of the world
-but that you keep them out of the
evil.
-They're not of the world
-as I'm not of it.
-Sanctify (set apart for yourself)
them in (by) the truth,
-your word is truth.
-As you sent me into the world
-I also sent them into the world.
-I sanctify myself for them
-that they may also be
sanctified in truth.
-I don't request for these only
-but also for those believing
-in me through their word
-that all may be one
-as you Father (are) in me
-and I in you
-that they may be in us
-that the world may believe
you sent me.
-I've given them the glory
-which you've given me
-that they may be one
-as we are one.
-I in them
-and you in me
-that they may be perfected in
one
-so the world may know
-you sent me
-and loved them
-as you love me.
-Father, I want those you've given me
-to be with me where I am
-and see my glory
-the glory you've given me
-because you loved me before the
world's creation.
-Righteous Father, the world doesn't
know you
-but I know you
-and these know you sent me.
-I've made your name known to them
-and will make it known
-so that the love with which
you love me
-may be in them
-and I in them."
(Chapter 17)
After saying these things Jesus went forth with
His disciples
-Across the Kidron torrent
-and entered a garden there with His
disciples.
-Judas, His betrayer, knew the place
-because Jesus often went there with His
disciples.
-So Judas, taking a band of
-attendants from the chief priests
-and Pharisees
-came there with lanterns, lamps
and weapons.
-Jesus, knowing all that was going to come
on Him,
-went forth and said "Who do you seek?"
-They said "Jesus the Nazarene."
-He replied "I AM (He)."
-Judas the betrayer stood with them.
-When Jesus told them "I AM"
-They backed away
-and fell on the ground.
-So He asked again "Who do you seek?"
-They said "Jesus the Nazarene."
-Jesus said "I told you I AM (He).
-If you seek me, allow these
(disciples) to go."
-This was to fulfill His word
-"Of those you've given me
-I lost none."
-Simon Peter drew his sword
-and cut off the right ear
-of Malcus the high priest's servant.
-Therefore Jesus said to Peter
-"Sheathe your sword,
-shall I not drink the cup the
Father's given me?"
-Then the troops, their captain and Jewish
officials
-took (arrested) Jesus,
-bound Him
-and led Him first to Annas.
-He was the father-in-law of
Caiaphas,
-the high priest that year.
-Caiaphas had advised the Jews
that
-it was expedient for one
man to die
-on behalf of the people.
-Simon Peter and another disciple followed
Jesus.
-The disciple, being known to the high
priest,
-went into the courtyard with Jesus.
-But Peter had to wait at the door
outside.
-The other disciple returned,
-spoke to the girl on duty at
the door
-and brought Peter in.
-She said to Peter "Aren't you
also one of His disciples?"
-Peter replied "I'm not."
-Being cold, servants and
officials
-stood round a fire they'd
made, warming themselves.
-Peter stood and warmed
himself with them.
-The high priest then questioned Jesus about
-His disciples and teaching.
-Jesus answered "I've spoken plainly to
the world,
-I always taught in synagogues,
-in the Temple where all the Jews
gather
-and I spoke nothing in secret.
-Why question me?
-Ask those who heard me speak,
-they know what I said."
-As He spoke, an attendant struck Him saying
-"Is this the way to answer the high
priest?"
-Jesus replied "If I spoke wrongly, bear
witness to the evil
-but if (I spoke) well
-why do you beat me?"
-Then Annas bound Him and sent Him
to Caiaphas the high priest.
-As Simon Peter stood warming himself, they
asked
-"Aren't you also one of His disciples?"
-He denied it saying "I'm not."
-One of the high priest's servants,
-a relative of the man whose ear
Peter cut off, said,
-"Didn't I see you with Him in the
garden?"
-Again Peter denied it,
-and immediately a cock crew.
-Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas
-to the Roman governor's palace.
-It was early morning
-and to avoid being defiled, they
didn't enter,
-wishing to be able to eat the
Passover.
-So Pilate went outside to them and said
-"What accusation do you bring against this
man?"
-They answered "Unless he was doing evil
-we wouldn't have delivered him to you."
-Pilate said "You take him
-and judge him according to your
Law."
-The Jews replied "It's unlawful
for us to kill anyone."
-This fulfilled the word Jesus
had spoken
-signifying by what death He
was about to die.
-Pilate went back inside his palace,
-called Jesus and said to Him,
-"Are you the King of the Jews?"
-Jesus answered "Do you say this of your
own accord
-or did others say it about me?"
-Pilate answered "Am I a Jew?
-Your nation and chief priests
delivered you to me,
-what did you do?"
-Jesus answered "My kingdom's not of this
world,
-if it was, my servants would have struggled
(fought)
-to prevent me being delivered to the
Jews.
-But my kingdom's not of this world."
-Pilate therefore said "Are you really
a king?"
-Jesus answered "You say I am,
-for this I was born
-and have come into the world
-that I might witness to the
truth.
-Everyone of the truth hears
my voice."
-Pilate said "What is truth?"
-He went out to the Jews again
-and said "I find no crime in him,
-but you have a custom that I
-release one (prisoner) to you at the
Passover,
-do you want me to release the King
of the Jews?"
-They cried out "Not this man but
Barabbas."
-But Barabbas was a robber.
(Chapter 18)
Then Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.
-The soldiers plaited a crown of thorns,
-put it on His head,
-threw a purple garment round Him,
-said to Him "Hail King of the Jews"
-and gave Him blows.
-Pilate went outside again
-and said to the Jews
-"I bring him out to you
-that you may know I find no crime in
him."
-So Jesus came forth,
-wearing the thorny wreath
-and purple garment
-and Pilate said to them
-"Behold the man."
-When the chief priests and officials saw Him
-they shouted "Crucify, Crucify."
-Pilate said "You take and crucify him,
-for I find no crime in him."
-The Jews answered "According to our
Law he ought to die
-because he made himself Son of
God."
-When Pilate heard this he was
more afraid.
-He entered his palace again
-and asked Jesus "Where are
you from?"
-But Jesus didn't answer.
-Pilate said "You refuse to speak to me?
-Don't you know I've authority to
release
-or crucify you?"
-Jesus answered "You'd have no
authority over me
-unless it were given you from
above,
-so the one who delivered me to
you
-has a greater sin."
-Because of this Pilate sought to release
Him.
-But the Jews shouted
-"If you release this man,
-you're not Caesar's friend
-(because) everyone making himself
a king
-speaks against Caesar.
-So Pilate brought Jesus outside,
-sat on the judgment seat,
-in a place called the Pavement,
(Gabbatha in Hebrew).
-It was about noon
-on the day before the Passover,
-and Pilate said to the Jews,
-"Behold your King."
-They shouted, "Take, take, crucify him."
-Pilate said "Shall I crucify your
King?"
-The chief priests answered
-"We've no king but Caesar."
-Then he delivered Him to them
-to be crucified.
-So they took Jesus
-and carrying His cross
-He went forth to the Place of the Skull
(in Hebrew Golgotha)
-where they crucified Him,
-with two others, one on either side.
-Pilate wrote a title and put it on
the cross.
-It read "Jesus the Nazarene the
King of the Jews."
-Many Jews read it
-because the place where they
crucified Jesus was near the
city,
-and it was written in Hebrew,
Latin and Greek.
-The chief priests of the Jews said
to Pilate
-"Don't write 'the King of the
Jews'
-but that he said 'I am the king
of the Jews'".
-Pilate replied "What I've
written, I've written."
-When the soldiers had crucified Jesus
-they each took one of His four garments.
-This left His seamless tunic (shirt
reaching from neck to knees)
-which was woven from the top.
-So they said to each other, "Let's
not tear it
-but cast lots for it"
-that the scripture might be
fulfilled
-"They parted my garments to
themselves
-and cast a lot over my
raiment."
-So that's what the soldiers
did (Ps 22:18).
-By Jesus' cross stood His mother,
-her sister, Mary (wife) of Clopas
-and Mary Magdalene.
-Jesus seeing His mother
-and the disciple He loved standing by
-said to His mother "Woman behold
your son"
-then to the disciple "Behold your
mother."
-From that hour the disciple
-took her to his own home.
-Then Jesus, knowing that now all things had
been finished,
-that the scripture might be fulfilled, said
"I thirst." (Ps 69:21, 22:15).
-A jar of vinegar was there.
-Putting a sponge full of vinegar round
a (stalk of) hyssop
-they brought it to His mouth.
-When Jesus took the vinegar He said
-"It is finished"
-and bowing His head
-delivered up His spirit.
-It was the Day of Preparation (for the
Passover)
-which fell on the Sabbath making it a great
day.
-So the Jews asked Pilate that their legs
be broken and the bodies removed,
-(to hasten death so they couldn't push
up with their legs to draw breath),
-because they didn't want bodies on
crosses on the Sabbath. (Deut 21:23
"If a man guilty of a capital offence
is put to death and his body hung on a
tree, you mustn't leave his body on
the tree overnight .. but bury him
that day because anyone hung on a tree
is under God's curse, you mustn't
desecrate the land the Lord your God
is giving you as an inheritance.")
-So soldiers came and broke the legs
-of the two crucified with Him.
-But they found Jesus already dead
-so didn't break His legs
-but a soldier pierced His
side with a lance
-and immediately blood and
water flowed out. (The
pericardium and heart being
pierced).
-The man who saw this has
witnessed,
-his witness is true
-and he knows he tells the
truth
-that you may believe.
-For these things happened to fulfill
the scripture
-"No bone of His shall be broken."
(Ex. 12:46, Num. 9:12, Ps 34:20)
-and another scripture says
"They'll look on Him whom they
pierced." (Zech. 12:10).
-After this, Joseph from Arimathea (a village
in the hill country of Ephraim about 20
miles north west of Jerusalem),
-asked Pilate for Jesus' body.
-He was a disciple of Jesus (and a member
of the Sanhedrin - Luke 23:51),
-but secretly, because he feared the
Jews.
-With Pilate's permission he took the
body away
-accompanied by Nicodemus (a
Pharisee and member of the Jewish
ruling council) who
-carried about 34 kilograms of
myrrh and aloes (a large amount
such as was used for royal
burials),
-who'd first visited Jesus by
night.
-They took Jesus' body and
-bound it in sheets with the
spices
-as is the burial custom of
the Jews.
-There was a garden where He
was crucified
-and in it a new tomb,
previously unused.
-Because it was the Jewish Day
of Preparation
-and the tomb was nearby
-they laid Jesus there.
(Chapter 19)
-While still dark on the morning of the first
day of the week (Sunday),
-Mary Magdalene came to the tomb
-and saw that the stone was removed from
its entrance.
-So she ran to Simon Peter and the other
disciple Jesus loved
-and said "They've taken the Lord out
of the tomb
-and we don't know where they put
Him."
-So Peter and the other disciple
ran to the tomb.
-The other disciple arrived
first,
-stooped and saw the sheets
lying
-but didn't enter.
-Peter arrived, went into the tomb
-saw the sheets lying
-and the burial cloth that had
been round His head,
-lying apart from the sheets,
-having been wrapped up in one
place.
-Then the other disciple, who'd
arrived first, entered
-and he saw and believed.
-They didn't yet know
(understand) the scripture
-that Jesus must rise from
the dead (Ps 16:10).
-So they returned home.
-But Mary stood outside the
tomb weeping.
-Still weeping, she stooped
down (looked) into the
tomb
-and saw two angels in white
-one sitting at the head and
one at the feet
-where the body of Jesus had
lain.
-They said "Woman why do you weep?"
-She said "They took my Lord
-and I don't know where they put Him."
-Then she turned round, saw Jesus
standing
-but didn't recognise Him.
-He said to her, "Woman, why do you
weep? Who do you seek?"
-Thinking it was the gardener she
said
-"Sir, if you carried Him away
-tell me where you put Him and
I'll take Him away."
-Jesus said to her "Mary."
-Turning, she said to Him in Hebrew
"Rabboni", meaning teacher.
-Jesus said to her "Don't touch me,
-for I've not yet ascended to the Father
-but go to my brothers and tell them
-I ascend to my Father and your
Father
-to my God and your God."
-Mary Magdalene came and told
the disciples
-she'd seen the Lord
-and that He'd said these
things to her.
-Early on the evening of that same day,
-the doors being shut where the disciples
were
-for fear of the Jews,
-Jesus came, stood in their midst,
-said "Peace to you"
-and showed them His hands and side.
-The disciples rejoiced when they
saw the Lord.
-Jesus said again "Peace to you,
-as the Father sent me
-I also send you."
-Then He breathed on them and
said
-"Receive the Holy Spirit,
-if you forgive anyone's sins,
they are forgiven,
-if you don't they aren't."
-Thomas, called the twin, one of the twelve,
wasn't with them when Jesus came.
-The other disciples told him "We've seen
the Lord."
-But he said "Unless I see the mark of the
nails in His hands,
-put my finger into the nail holes
-and put my hand into His side
-I won't believe."
-Eight days later the disciples, including
Thomas,
-were together with the doors shut.
-Jesus came, stood in their midst and said
"Peace to you."
-Then He said to Thomas
-"Put your finger here,
-see my hands,
-put your hand into my side
-and be not faithless
-but faithful (believing)."
-Thomas said "My Lord and my God."
-Jesus said "Because you've seen me
have you believed?
-Blessed (are) those not seeing
-and believing."
-Jesus did many other signs before the
disciples
-which aren't written in this book.
-But these have been written
-that you may believe
-that Jesus is the Christ,
-the Son of God
-and that believing,
-you may have life in His name.
(Chapter 20)
Afterward Jesus manifested (revealed) Himself to
the disciples
-on the Sea of Galilee in this way.
-Simon Peter, Thomas the twin, Nathanael
from Cana in Galilee,
-the sons of Zebedee (James and John) and
two other disciples,
-were together.
-Simon Peter said to them "I'm going
to fish."
-They said "We'll come too."
-So they embarked in the boat,
-fished all night and caught
nothing.
-Early next morning Jesus stood on the shore
-But the disciples didn't know it was He.
-Jesus said to them "Children have you
caught any fish?"
-They replied "No."
-So He said "Cast your nets on the
right side
-of the boat and you'll find
(some.)"
-They did, and couldn't haul the
net in it was so full of fish.
-So the disciple Jesus loved
said to Peter
-"It's the Lord."
-Simon Peter, who was naked, girded himself
-and threw himself into the sea.
-But the other disciples came in the boat
-which was about 90 metres from shore,
-dragging the net full of fish.
-Disembarking they saw a fish lying
on a coal fire
-and some bread.
-Jesus said to them "Bring some
of the fish you've caught."
-Simon Peter dragged the net
to the shore,
-it was full of 153 large fish
-yet the net wasn't torn.
-Jesus said "Come and have breakfast."
-None of the disciples dared ask "Who are
you?"
-knowing it was the Lord.
-Jesus came, took the bread and fish
-and gave it to them.
-This was the third time He
manifested Himself
-to the disciples after being
raised from the dead.
-After breakfast Jesus said to Peter
-"Simon, son of John, do you love me (agape
love, the kind Jesus showed on the cross)
-more than these?" (Nets, fish,
profession).
-Peter said "Yes, Lord, you know I love
you." (phileo love - brotherly family
love).
-Jesus said "Feed my lambs."
-Jesus said a second time
-"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
(agape).
-He replied "Yes Lord you know I love
you." (phileo).
-Jesus said "Shepherd my little
sheep."
-Jesus said a third time
-"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"
(phileo).
-Peter was grieved that He asked him the
-third time "Do you love me?" and said
to Him
-"Lord you know everything,
-you know I love you." (phileo).
-Jesus said to him "Feed my
little sheep.
-Truly I tell you, when you
were younger
-you dressed yourself and went
your own way,
-but when you grow old,
-you'll stretch out your hands
-and another will dress you
-and carry you where you don't
want to go."
-He said this signifying the kind of death by
which
-Peter would glorify God.
-Then He said to him "Follow me."
-Turning, Peter saw the disciple Jesus
loved, following,
-the one who leaned on Jesus' breast
at the Supper
-and said "Lord, who'll betray you?"
-and Peter said "Lord, what about
him?"
-Jesus said "If I wish him to
remain
-until I come (return), what's
that to you?
-You follow me."
-Because of this the rumour spread among the
brothers
-that that disciple wouldn't die.
-But Jesus didn't say he wouldn't die
-but that "If I wish him to remain until
I come, what's it to you?"
-This is the disciple (John) witnessing about
these things
-and who has written these things
-and we know his witness is true.
-There are also many other things which
Jesus did
-which, if every one were written,
-I think the world wouldn't have
room
-to contain the books that would
be written.
