Life is like driving down a highway.
You can do it one of two ways.
The first is to ‘ exercise your right to be free ‘ , decide how to do it and down the highway you go.
The second is to learn the road rules, practice them with an experienced driver, pass tests and then drive down the highway.
The first way is the popular ‘ easy way ‘, because there is no ‘restrictive ‘ moral law or higher authority to whom you are accountable. Fellow travellers believe that, since ‘ the world just happened ‘, there is no ultimate right , wrong or truth, so everyone is free to ‘ do their own thing ‘. ( Which is ok until ‘their own thing’ conflicts with yours and the ‘ survival of the fittest ‘, or the ‘law of the jungle ’can result ).
The second way is less popular. It is based on the belief that the world was created by an intelligent person who gave moral laws to protect it.
So, at the outset, fundamental questions about good and evil, man and God and world history itself are raised. These issues are dealt with in appendix 3.
People have all sorts of gods and with one exception, all are based on man’s ideas about Him. Which involve getting on side with Him by working to please Him
The exception is the God who made Himself known by being born and living the same way as us, dying to solve our worst problem, proving He was God by rising from the dead, giving a guidebook to follow and empowering His followers to live by it.
In this guidebook He offers to meet your GREATEST NEED, which is to be REALLY understood, cared for and LOVED
UNCONDITIONALLY. And this comes with forgiveness, a new start and a genuinely fulfilled life. All offered as a free gift, which can’t be worked for, earned or deserved. And received by turning to and trusting in Jesus Christ. He not only SHOWS you the way to live, He GOES with you on the way. As Jesus said, ‘ I am the way the truth and the life ‘.
It was 3 am. A pitch black night in the middle of Egypt. I was at the foot of Mt Sinai, about to climb the mountain where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. No idea of the way, couldn’t see the path. Danger and fear if I climbed alone. But I had a guide who had been up there hundreds of times. All I had to do was follow his steps. Made it to the top, a great experience. All because of a trustworthy guide.
‘LIVING AND LOVING The right way ‘ is based on His guidebook, the Bible.
‘ Off course notes ‘ give a few examples of what happens when the handbook is not followed.
Bracketed numbers give Bible texts in Appendix 1.
Short paragraphs and ‘ Bullet ‘ headings allow you to use the book as a checklist to tick headings as you put them into practice.
Our aim is to keep this short, simple and practical, while covering the essential principles. Millions of books have been written about how these principles have, or have not, been applied in practice.
As a builder needs a plumb line to build a wall right, this book gives a ‘ plumb line ‘ to help you get your life right. Everyone gets out of line at times, but because there IS a line, you will be able recognize the problem and correct it.
